The Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art in Monfalcone

Emerging exhibition venue at regional and national level, a place of knowledge and dialogue.

Art in Monfalcone

The Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art in Monfalcone, an emerging exhibition venue at regional and national level, opened in 2002 and is located in a historic, recently restored building in town. Over the recent years, the Gallery has gained prominence on the international art scene thanks to exhibitions focusing on the futurism of Tullio Crali, Giacomo Balla and Fortunato Depero (2019), the spatialism of Lucio Fontana (2020) and, recently, on the avant-gardes of Kandinsky (2021-2022).

This result was also achieved thanks to major historical exhibitions aimed at reconstructing the town’s precious identity, such as Venezia e il Patriarcato (t/n: Venice and the Patriarchate) and Città Murata nel segno di Dante (t/n: The Walled City under the Sign of Dante), which featured masterpieces by Guardi, Canaletto, Tiepolo and archaeological manufacts from the National Museums in Aquileia and Cividale.

In the period 2021 to 2023, the gallery exhibition programme will include modern and contemporary art displays, design and industrial archaeology projects in cooperation with the Polo Museale della Cantieristica di Monfalcone (a museum complex including the art gallery since 2017; the shipbuilding museum MuCa – Museo della Cantieristica, and the shipyard workers’ village of Panzano) as well as with major institutions like the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and the Venice Civic Museums Foundation.

The cooperation agreement between the Municipality of Monfalcone and Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE, Venice Civic Museums Foundation) was signed in 2019 and has now resulted in a first joint exhibition – “Point, line and plane. Kandinsky and the avant-gardes”, which is entirely made up of works from the collection of Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art.
The four-year cooperation agreement is aimed at promoting the museums and exhibition venues of both cities and will help Monfalcone to revive its historic relationship with the Serenissima while hosting great artists and masterpieces from Ca’ Pesaro immense heritage. Overlooking the same sea, Monfalcone and Venice share a millennial history that will be reflected in historical exhibitions devoted to both great masters of the past and contemporary artists, with an eye to the future and special attention to the shipbuilding industry, a landmark for both cities.

Plans for the period of 2021-2023 follow three main directions.
As far as great events are concerned, a second important exhibition on Crali and Futurism. Cultural avant-garde is scheduled for 2022. It will focus on the painting cycle of the great master, with further fifty futurist and aeropainting works from public and private collections.
As for local artists, both emerging and established, after Piero Conestabo and Aldo Bressanutti exhibitions in 2020-2021, one or two exhibitions are planned to take place every year based on the belief that it is important to value local traditions and cultural identity as an expression of their land and an impulse for local development.
A third area of interest is connected to the Polo Museale della Cantieristica Navale (shipyard museums) and benefits from the cooperation with the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, which has already contributed to previous exhibitions (such as the Nino Zoncada exhibition) with works by Mascherini, Munari, Baj, Spacal, Severini, Fini, Fiume and many others. The focus here will be on theme exhibitions related to ship design and decoration, the birth of the famous local shipyard and on the far-sighted Cosulich family.

In addition to all of the above, the gallery will also be a place of knowledge and exchange with citizens and tourists thanks to a rich program of side activities, including guided tours, educational experiences and workshops for families and school groups, cultural and popular science events and opportunities for deeper understanding.
